Slow conversionsCrunch relies on QuickTime for most of its conversion work which makes it slow. n our test machine we compared compression times of Crunch against VisualHub. Using the Apple TV – Fastest setting in Crunch to compress a 350MB DivX movie took 38 minutes to produce a 640 x 360 resolution file; using VisualHub’s highest quality Apple TV setting took just 15 minutes to produce a 624 x 352 file although the picture quality was poorer than Crunch’s. Switching to Apple TV – Best in Crunch took an astonishing 1 hour and 47 minutes to produce a file of the same resolution despite Apple TV being capable of displaying 720-width videos; turning on H. 264 encoding in VisualHub to match Crunch still took that program only 40 minutes. Surprisingly Crunch’s ‘highest quality’ conversion was the worst of the lot. At the moment Crunch offers little that free or cheaper programs don’t provide.

We estimate that there remain up to 338000 shares of DivX which PEI may receive in future distributions from Zone Ventures II. A number of Funds held by the Company have written up the holding value of their portfolio investments in line with the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s FAS 157 which defines fair value establishes a framework for measuring fair value and expands disclosures about fair value measurements. Although not technically effective until 2008 this standard is beginning to be applied and should generally result in higher valuations as underlying investments are valued at fair value rather than principally on a transaction basis or in order to recognise a provision. The Company’s year-end cash and readily realisable assets totalled $65. 4 million compared with outstanding commitments of $25.

Primarily it’s a games machine I also use it as a Media Centre a workstation when working from home a file server for the other machines in my home and a web server so I can access my stuff when I’m on the road. Will the effective annexing of these usages not mean I will be forced into buying yet more MS software and devices whilst giving away most of the freedoms that I enjoy with my PC?For example Vista Media Centre is a great program loads better than anything else I’ve come across for this purpose but no Divx (. avi Xvid etc call it what you like) support out of the box so my collection of movies I have *ahem* aquired over the years is no longer supported. No problem you say download the codec but correct me if I’m wrong I would be locked into a MS Home Cinema “Platform” and would either have to convert to their proprietry file formats or lose my media. No doubt this would also apply to any MS Home automation products In Car platforms and whatever Windows Mobiles becomes. Standardisation is a good thing as this brings interopability and your right about the tangle of wires behind my TV but this isn’t solved any by the fact that the tangle behind my PC are nearly all USB’s.

In-flight internet revived; Qantas offers WiFi to all classes -…

However the lucky ones who do manage to catch one of the upcoming to Airbuses will be delighted to know that even economy class will feature laptop power! Perhaps of even greater awe Qantas will offer web and email access via seat-back in-flight entertainment systems if you aren’t carrying a laptop with you. With the addition of the new more flexible kangaroo logo Qantas has decided to place USB and Ethernet ports on the premium economy classes. The USB port will be designed to browse the in-flight entertainment system; however Qantas is still discussing on whether to add Divx video capability (my personal choice) or the ability to connect with iPod. The company behind all these innovations is NAIR; however we have little information about it but this.
