It can downmix Dolby Digital soundtracks to a stereo PCM signal if you don’t want surround sound. In addition to DVDs the PDP100 can also play CDs and DVDs with DivX files on them as well as MP3s and JPEGs.

Toshiba T400 available tomorrow says Sam’s Club
infoSync World – Sep 24, 2007
Devices should go out in the mail tomorrow September 25 according to the discount club store. The player will feature audio playback for MP3 WMA and WAV files and video playback for WMV videos at QVGA resolution. If that seems like too many acronyms to you we’d still like to see a few more like AAC for music or possible DiVX for movies but Toshiba is keeping things simple with this player. The display seems to be the standout feature. 4-inches the QVGA screen is larger than most displays on players this size and it is almost a half-inch larger than Apple’s diminutive new iPod nano. The site also claims battery life of about 16 hours for audio or 5 hours for video which seems right on the video side and a bit low for what we’d expect from music playback.

Toshiba Gigabeat T400 (4GB pink)
CNET Reviews – Sep 25, 2007
Video quality is above average but not quite as compelling as the player’s high-fidelity audio. Content recorded natively by our Windows Media Center DVR appeared sharp and crisp. We weren’t thrilled by the video artifacts introduced when Windows Media Player transcoded our high-res AVI and DivX movies but that’s no fault of Toshiba’s. We found the Gigabeat T’s glossy plastic screen is no stranger to glare but users watching videos under daylight conditions shouldn’t have a problem when using the Gigabeat’s brightest screen setting. With a battery rated for 16 hours of audio and 5 hours of video the Gigabeat T’s battery life is nothing to write home about. Considering that Flash-based MP3 players like the Sony NWZ-S610 and iPod Nano (third-gen) are reaching around the 30-hour mark for audio playback the Gigabeat T400 is certainly not setting any high standards. Stay tuned for our official battery results from the CNET labs.

ppo DV-981HD: The player that will play anything
Crave – Sep 24, 2007
ppo a company not especially well known in the UK but popular in the US is bringing its range of upscaling DVD players to the UK starting with the DV-981HD. So what’s the big attraction of the 981? Firstly it can play damn near anything you care to throw at it including the obvious DivX and XviD formats. But then you would almost expect that of a £20 supermarket special these days. The exciting bit is that it will also gladly tackle the high-definition DVD Audio and SACD audio formats. What’s more the DV-981 also had the ability to.

The jury is out on internet video
iMedia Connection – Sep 24, 2007
Keeping an eye on the near-future when internet video makes its way to the living room this video format is poised to have a big impact. Like any debacle involving J and the law nothing in online video is simply black and white. Both of these video formats are working to better their products while other players like Real DivX and QuickTime are hustling to make their mark in the space as well and all parties involved have their pros and cons. With all the opportunity in online video I the jury find that the winners will actually be those video distributors who build platforms that are compatible with both Flash’s AND Silverlight’s video codecs and of course their respective ad formats. Bet you didn’t see that coming!Bradley Werner is the director of marketing for.
