Cons: lder and end of life by my standards Summary: I have this hooked up via component to my Sony DDW990 receiver and 42″ Plasma and the PQ (picture quality) is really good. The unit does have limited features but for a DVD player that is only 2 or so years old it gets the job done. Where this unit kicks is it has DivX playback ability which is very nice. Burn the DivX from legal online sources and play it with this player. Very functional but with the setup I have it’s not quite cutting it.

69GHzRecoding an AVI file with Nero 8 to Nero Digital format does show a small swing towards Penryn but it?s only eight seconds in five minutes. Again that leaves very little to choose between stock CPUs. However there?s a far greater benefit when you use DivX 6. 7 to recode the AVI file. The 3GHz Kentsfield takes 10 minutes 59 seconds but the Penryn steams through the job in 10 minutes 12 seconds. The reason for the extra performance is that DivX 6. 7 supports SSE 4 which hands an advantage to Penryn – albeit a small one… 7 to recode the AVI file. PV-Ray only supports SSE 2 so there?s nothing to choose between the two architectures: both yielded roughly the same score. However it is a fully-threaded application that hammers all four cores at full speed which is handy when you want to check the power draw of the processor. We used a plug-in power monitor to check the power draw for our test system and found that Penryn was consistently more frugal with the juice.

Both WorldBench scores would place right in the middle of our top five gaming PC chart though the GPU and hard-drive setup we used weren’t cutting-edge just close to it. As mentioned earlier none of the applications in the WorldBench 6 Beta 2 suite are optimized to take advantage of the new SSE4 (Streaming SIMD [Single Instruction Multiple Data] Extensions 4) instruction set and only a few WorldBench apps can take advantage of more than two cores. Intel’s own benchmark results released on ctober 28 as well as the demos we witnessed at the fall Developer Forum showed much larger performance gains with SSE4-optimized applications such as an HD-optimized DivX encoder. InfrastructureThe Asus Maximus Formula is one of several Penryn-ready X38-based boards that use DDR2 RAM despite chip-set support for DDR3. Though they use the same LGA 775 socket as all recent Intel desktop processors do Penryn chips aren’t necessarily a drop-in replacement. Snyder says that the company will guarantee reliable operation only with its P35 and X38 chip sets not with those of the older 975X and 965 families.

Support for multimedia formats such as MP3 and DivX has always been problematic for free Linux distributions because of patent restrictions. In the past Ubuntu users relied on third-party scripts to load all of the appropriate content handlers. Now Gutsy has made adding support as easy as it can be by giving you the option to install the appropriate codecs with the click of a button the first time you try to play an unsupported file. This goes for proprietary Firefox plug-ins also such as Adobe Flash Player. But you can forget about the iTunes Music Store as DRM-encrypted media is still off-limits.
