Camcorders Review Archos 404 review
TechRadar UK – Oct 25, 2007
This multimedia player boasts no less than 30GB of storage (up to 80 hours of video or 15000 ‘average’ songs) and depending on how you’ve configured it will support Microsoft’s ‘PlaysForSure’ or an external hard disk mode. The quality of DivX and XviD replay can be superb depending on the source quality. Interestingly the player will also display PDF documents and JPEG stills. The Archos 404 is a great little device that’s certainly more convenient than a portable DVD player – and better for video than an iPod.

Video playbackAgain we were pleasantly surprised. It seems that any MPEG4 based video will play back on the Eee PC. DivX and xVid videos play without issue. And yes if you want to watch You Tube within your Fire Fox browser on the Eee PC that’s completely doable. In fact here’s a You Tube video of a You Tube video playing on the Eee PC to prove it (that hurts to think about):.

To get video onto the hard drive you can either transfer it from a PC or use the device itself to record directly from a set-top box video recorder or DVD player. We recorded an episode of Lost and found the quality was pretty impressive for such a small unit; pictures had vibrant colours and didn’t suffer from the blocking effect that plagued older media jukeboxes. The Archos also does an impressive job of playing back movies in DivX and WMV format transferred across from a PC. Good-quality files look especially nice on the excellent high-resolution screen. However if you’ve already got a big digital video collection watch out – it’s a bit fussy about the types of files it’ll play and simply refused to show videos encoded with certain codecs. There are no qualms on the music side though. As well as playing MP3s the device also supports WMA files and even works flawlessly with the Napster To Go subscription service.

If that wasn\’t bad enough you can\’t get video you\’ve recorded from the television off the box a bit of a missed opportunity if you ask us.

Recordings can be done in a variety of different quality\’s although SP is good enough for watching soaps etc and the large hard drive means you can store up to 400 films 300000 photos or 200000 MP3 tracks. ‘} {button:false embeds: true}). attachButton(document.
