File Sharing Made Me Buy a DVD

I didn’t have a chance to go to the store and I’ve been seeing ads for it on Xbox Live all week. So I was going to rent it and download it via Xbox Live but I didn’t have enough space on my 20 gig hard drive for the HD version. So I downloaded a 700 meg Divx Avi off a BitTorrent system and on Saturday and threw it on a USB thumb drive and watched the first twenty minutes of it on my Xbox 360. The movie is a CG animation masterpiece and the compressed version was not doing it justice so I stopped and played Lost dyssey. Today I went to the store found a physical copy of movie and spent 20 bucks on a real DVD. It looked completely awesome and I might not have made the purchase if I were not able to check it out from the torrent. I believe in paying and supporting artists but I also believe in fair use and real world copyright.

Beware of such DRM (Digital Rights Management) hamstringing use of a device or content. Before buying a media centre check it can stream YouTube and QuickTime videos and that all the video and audio formats and codes you commonly use are supported. These include Xvid and DivX codec videos plus audio formats such as MP3 WMA FLAC RealAudio and gg Vorbis. Support for internet radio is an increasingly popular feature. A PC-STYLE media centre should also allow you to access emerging internet television (aka IPTV) and video-on-demand services such as Joost Veoh Hulu and Babelgum. A tuner card can enable a media centre to receive standard and high-definition digital TV then record and timeshift programs similar to set-top recorders such as the TiVo. Video and audio files can be stored on the media centre’s own hard drive — 1TB is excellent 500GB is good and 250GB is K — or elsewhere on your network.

I intend to go TV free when analogue dies out. anzacdave (Victoria) I purchased a High Definition TV card ($AU45 including software) which was a sinch to install into my computer (slot the card in install the software run the tuning wizard) and the result is excellent – full blown High Definition plus the normal low definition offerings (Melbourne has 5 dedicated high-def channels). I can record TV shows directly to hard drive (download Divx to convert the recordings to reasonable size about 350 MB per hour) and view wide screen on a 24" monitor. Don't waste you money on an overpriced rip off ($500! -outrageous)! Happy Mum (Manurewa) We have Sky. When Freeview brings over the Discovery channel and CI channel then maybe I will look at Freeview. But for the amount of TV we watch (sod all on tv 1 2 and 3) it's not worth it. We are happy to pay the $25 a month to Sky for the basic channels and discovery and CI.

5 GB or so for an hour at the lowest quality for MPEG2. Movie length MPEG4 recordings are in the 15-20 GB range so you will need lots of hard drive space. If I want to keep any recordings I convert from MPEG2 to a much smaller DivX file. Tangata Kehua (Levin) Freeview is worse off than Sky or normal TV. We have it at the moment and it is always stuffing up all the time! Neil (Auckland) More crap reality shows and celebrity "news" but in HD ? Yeah right! Good TV shows (very little of these around) are easily downloadable now so I don't even care what's on TV these days – plus TVNZ and TV3 screen shows here months after it's shown in US.
