A recessed panel on the unit’s front hides both a USB input and a 3. 5mm jack for external audio. The system supports mp3 WMA JPEG and DivX files and these can be played back from a disc or via the USB connection. The on-screen menu for file navigation was simplistic and allowed for searching several folders deep though control with the remote was slightly sluggish and difficult. If you’re a fan of backing up and burning video to disc this system supports all DVD and CD formats except for DVD-RAM. Setup of the system was surprisingly easy — the speakers simply screw into the base of the stands and the supplied cables are more than an adequate length. The receiver also has functionality for altering the volume of each individual channel allowing for a lot of flexibility when setting up.

I could probably live without that. There is enough content around in non-H264 formats that I could live without it. Don’t think they’re especially hard to set up? To use the basics it’s just drag and drop I think? Brother in law owned an older model and it was pretty straightforward to use.

In terms of actual performance the Phenom 2. 3GHz chip falls behind the Q6600 by margins between 15% to as high as 30%. The latter performance differences were seen mostly when running games and our WAV to MP3 and DivX conversion tests. As a pure number crunch platform then Spider isn’t the best choice because the Phenom processor lineup isn’t as fast as Intel’s Core 2 chips. The machine’s graphics system comprised two Radeon HD 3850 graphics cards running in CrossFire-X mode as standard. These graphics cards are entry-level performance cards and retail for under $175 a piece on the market. To test just how much of an improvement CrossFire-X makes we first benchmarked the PC with only a single card at the resolutions of 1024 x 768 pixels and 1600 x 1200 pixels.
